Questions about tea

What is tea?
Tea is an extremely healthy and delicious beverage that is prepared using camellia sinensis leaves that have been dried, roasted, pan-fried, aged, smoked, etc. Usually, tea is prepared hot by steeping the leaves in water hotter than 180°F and letting the leaves steep for a certain amount of minutes. There are several types of tea, each classified by how long the tea leaves are oxidized for. The classifications are: White tea, Green tea, Oolong tea, Black tea, and Pu-Erh tea.

Herbal tea is a beverage made from a variety of fruits, herbs, flowers, or anything other than the traditional camellia sinensis leaf. Herbal teas should generally be steeped with boiling water. Always check with your doctor before taking herbal tea for specific remedies to make sure they will work for you.

How do you steep loose tea?
Each type of tea should be steeped differently to obtain full benefits and flavour. If a tea is steeped to hot, the tea leaves may be burned and it will create that 'bitter' taste. If the water is too cold, the leaves won't be able to release all it's natural goodness. Follow our recommended tea steeping guide for the best cup. Measurements are based on 1 tsp of tea leaves.
